Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward sustainable public transportation with the introduction of hydrogen and electric buses under the Green Bus Programme. This initiative aims to make Abu Dhabi Island a fully green public transport zone by 2030, reducing carbon emissions and promoting an eco-friendly mobility system. The new buses currently operate on Route 65, which connects Marina Mall to Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island. By replacing traditional diesel-powered buses, the program is expected to cut over 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, significantly improving air quality and reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
The initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and investing in clean energy solutions. The Green Bus Programme supports the nation’s goal of creating smarter, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transport networks. As the project expands, more hydrogen and electric buses will be introduced across the emirate, further contributing to sustainability efforts. Abu Dhabi’s leadership in green transportation sets a model for other cities in the region, demonstrating the potential for cleaner urban mobility. This move highlights the UAE’s dedication to environmental conservation while enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
